"More than a Backpack" Equips Foster Children for Class

When the bell rings to begin a new school year, 6,000 foster children will be prepared for class.

The 2018 Kids to Love “More than a Backpack” campaign has filled 5,863 backpacks through the month of July, and new requests for help come in almost daily.

“More than a Backpack” is Kids to Love’s farthest reaching program for meeting the immediate needs of foster children. It stretches through four states: Alabama, Georgia, Mississippi and Tennessee.

The backpacks are stuffed with pencils, paper, crayons and other classroom necessities.

“We have heard first-hand stories from our kids about having to borrow paper or pens from classmates, and that dependency destroys their confidence,” says Kids to Love Founder/CEO Lee Marshall. “A brand new backpack filled with what they need boosts their self-esteem and puts them on an even playing field.”

A day-long drive hosted by CB&S Bank and iHeart Media allowed our community to contribute. Two Men and a Truck also played an important part in the day’s outreach. Southland Idealease assisted with delivery to south Alabama.

Kids to Love accepts donations of new school supplies year-round. For a complete list of items needed, visit the “More than a Backpack” program page.
