Hundreds of backpacks shipped out for More Than a Backpack, but thousands still to go

Hundreds of backpacks are on their way to children in foster care, and the Kids to Love Foundation is still filling more with school supplies to help children succeed when they return to school in August.

Monday morning Kids to Love Founder and CEO Lee Marshall got behind the wheel of a forklift and loaded 1,713 backpacks onto a truck donated by Southeastern Freight Lines as part of our More Than a Backpack program. Southeastern took the backpacks to Montgomery, where they were set to be given out later in the week.

Once they were gone, it was back to work, stocking more backpacks with school supplies. School may have just ended last month for many children, but the Kids to Love team starts early in the summer to meet the demand for school supplies before August.

Each backpack packed in Kids to Love’s More Than a Backpack program contains school age-appropriate school supplies for children, from kindergarten through high school.

The program is called More Than a Backpack because for many children in foster care, a backpack can be more than something that carries their school supplies: It could become the only way to carry their permanent possessions.

“Children who are removed from their homes often don’t get to pack their things in a suitcase,” said Marshall. “Many times they take the few belongings they have in a trash bag. They deserve better. Many children will use these backpacks to take what they have with them when they have to move.”

Last year, Kids to Love delivered about 6,000 backpacks to children in Alabama and Tennessee.

Kids to Love is partnered with CB&S Bank and Mix 96.9 for More Than a Backpack.

Donations can be dropped off at any CB&S Bank branch, Rosenblum Realty at 2314 Memorial Parkway SW in Huntsville, Mix 96.9 studios at 8402 Memorial Parkway SW in Huntsville, or at Kids to Love at 140 Castle Drive in Madison.

Kids to Love also has its Click, Ship, & Give program that allows anyone to buy school supplies online through Amazon. Those items will ship straight from Amazon to the Kids to Love warehouse for distribution.
